Work. We all hate it, but we've all got to do it. That's life. I'm lucky. I'm 16 and I work just 3 hours a week. But still, this little raster of the working life I'm getting is making me dread the real world after college and uni.
I work in a cafe at a leisure centre. It's not a bad little place, the staff are friendly, but during my shifts I'm totally alone. No-one to talk to or help out. And I would say "which is quite nice at times", but that would just be lying. It's not at all nice. Some days it's really quiet. And I mean dead quiet. That's what we call it. Dead. "Alright Joe, how busy is it today?" "Dead" "Greaaat"
So then I sit here for 3 hours defacing "OK" magazine or making endless amounts of 20p mix-ups. Time passes so s l o w l y it's unbelievable. At the end of my 3 hour shift I'll have ony served about 3 people. So at times like that I'd be really greatful if I had someone to work. That way we'd both be sat doing nothing, but at least it would be someone to do be doing nothing with.
On the other hand, some days it's manic here. "Alright Joe, how busy is it today?" "Manic" "Greaaat". Those days are when there's a basketball or gymnastics or swimming tournament on or something like that. Or when there's football being played over on the field and people come over to get never ending supplies of tea and coffee to warm their freezing extremities. And on those days I would be extremely greatful to have someone to work with so that the queue leading out of the door would be halved. And still, even on these ridiculously busy days time goes unbelievably s l o w l y. I'll serve what feels like 100 people and still only 5 minutes has past.
Today is a "dead" day. There's no-one here, most likely because of the ice. That's another thing: it's freezing too. My thumbs are working very hard just to type this on my iPhone for you. The kitchen is even colder though, and the dishwasher's broken. That means that if I do get any customers wanting hot drinks I'll have to wash their dirty mugs up myself out there. Fun. However, I have been here for exactly 57 minutes (though I have no Internet so this won't actually be posted while I'm at work) and I have served just 2 people. Dad says he'll come and pick me up early if the weather begins to deteriorate so I'm currently playing for more snow.
Not only is it incredibly quiet here, but I have been cut of from the rest of the leisure centre. There's a party due in the area next to me in a minute so they pull the shutters across the back of the reception to give ten some privacy. Unfortunatley that means I get hidden away too and any potential customers then don't even realise I'm here at all!
In other news...
I'm wearing Christmas socks today. They're Red and White stripes with a picture of Santa Claus on, but the best thing? Each sock has a little bell on it, so I jingle wherever I go.
Well, I'd better get back to work. Phahahaa!
*Update*
It's so cold now you can actually see your breath. No joke. Even an Eskimo would be saying "Cor Blimey it's a bit chilly in 'ere!" So made myself a hot chocolate to warm me up a bit but what happened? The party came through, and all the adults wanted hot drinks. And I whilst I was rushing around serving them I kept glacing back at my delicious mug of hot chocoloate...lukewarm chocolate...cold chocolate. Great.
